On June 27, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that preserves the structure of a federal task force charged with recommending preventative services to be covered at no cost to patients under the Affordable Care Act. In doing so, the Court ensured that many preventative services – including screenings for a wide range of cancers – will continue to be covered by insurers at no cost to patients.
Constance Blunt MD was interviewed by the American Journal for Managed Care before the ruling was handed down. “It’s not just the screenings that are covered,” she said. “If patients don’t get screened, and they do have a problem—and we find it later—that’s another increase in financial burden, in the number of appointments, in the number of treatments…. Early detection is so important, not just because it saves lives, but it also has a big financial impact.”
